Canned Hunt

A canned hunt is a trophy hunt that is not conducted under conditions of fair chase, typically because the game animal is confined to a fenced area such as a private ranch, which prevents its escape and makes it far easier for the hunter to track and kill. The practice has also been applied to some forms of driven grouse shooting on British farmland, where birds are released in large numbers shortly before being shot. The term is understood pejoratively and is not one that practitioners themselves use, and canned hunting draws criticism from both conservation minded hunters, who see it as contrary to sporting hunting's own ethic, and animal welfare advocates.
