Causing death by dangerous driving is a statutory offense committed when a person causes the death of another by driving a motor vehicle dangerously on a road or other public place. It exists in England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Hong Kong, and in the United Kingdom was created by the Road Traffic Act 1988 as amended by the Road Traffic Act 1991. Before 28 June 2022 the maximum sentence in the United Kingdom was 14 years imprisonment with a minimum two year driving ban, but the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 raised the maximum to life imprisonment with a minimum five year disqualification for offenses committed after that date, while in Hong Kong the offense carries up to ten years imprisonment, a fine of about 50,000 Hong Kong dollars, and at least five years disqualification from driving.
