A chop shop is a business, often disguised as a legitimate auto body shop, that illicitly sells stolen motor vehicles or their parts for profit, frequently as part of an organized car-theft operation. In the United States, laws such as the Motor Vehicle Theft Law Enforcement Act of 1984 and the Federal Anti-Car Theft Act of 1992 require manufacturers to mark vehicle components to make stolen parts traceable, and chop shop operators attempt to evade these measures by altering vehicle identification numbers or falsifying sale paperwork.
