A deadly weapon, sometimes called a dangerous weapon or lethal weapon, is an item capable of inflicting mortal or great bodily harm. By statutory definition certain items, especially firearms, are designated deadly weapons per se, meaning the law treats them as deadly weapons no matter how they are used. Deadly weapons statutes often also cover other implements when they are used with the intent to inflict harm.
