Email spoofing is the creation of an email message with a forged sender address, so that the message appears to come from someone other than its actual sender. Because the original email transmission protocols include no built in authentication, this deficiency lets spammers and phishers use spoofing to mislead recipients, and few internal networks defend against a spoofed message sent from a colleagues own compromised account. Individuals and businesses deceived by spoofed emails can suffer significant financial loss, and spoofed messages are frequently used to deliver ransomware.
