Forced pregnancy is the practice of forcibly impregnating a woman or girl without her consent, carried out as part of a forced marriage, a program of breeding slaves, or a campaign of genocide. In 1998 the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court became the first international instrument to expressly list forced pregnancy as both a crime against humanity and a war crime, defining it as the unlawful confinement of a woman forcibly made pregnant with the intent of affecting the ethnic composition of a population or committing other grave violations of international law. The International Criminal Court secured its first conviction for forced pregnancy in the case against Lord's Resistance Army commander Dominic Ongwen, upheld on appeal in December 2022.
