Insurrection

A violent uprising or organized rebellion against the authority of an established government, typically involving an attempt to prevent the government from exercising its lawful functions or to overthrow it by force. Many legal systems, including United States federal law, codify insurrection as a distinct offense from treason and sedition: treason requires giving aid to an enemy or levying war against one's own country in a manner meeting a specific constitutional or statutory definition, sedition criminalizes speech or organizing that incites resistance to lawful authority without necessarily involving violence, while insurrection specifically concerns an actual violent uprising against government authority, whether or not it succeeds. Historical and contemporary insurrection prosecutions have often turned on the degree of organized, violent intent shown by participants rather than on mere participation in a protest that turns disorderly.
