In the United States, a Minor in Possession offense, sometimes called an MIP or a charge of Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age, applies to any person under the legal drinking age of twenty-one who possesses or consumes alcohol. Underage consumption of alcohol is illegal in every state, typically charged as a misdemeanor, though in California it can instead be charged as a lesser infraction depending on the county. With only narrow special-circumstance exceptions, anyone under twenty-one found in possession of alcohol in the United States is violating state law.
