Property damage, also called damage to property, is the damage or destruction of another persons real or tangible personal property, whether caused by negligence, willful destruction, or an act of nature. When the damage results from willful misconduct rather than accident or nature it becomes destruction of property, a criminal offense covering conduct ranging from vandalism and arson to the deliberate implosion of a building. The civil claim for property damage is handled separately from the criminal offense, which requires the deliberate or malicious intent that turns ordinary damage into a punishable crime.
