School violence

School violence covers violence between students, attacks by students on school staff, and attacks by staff on students, occurring in physical, psychological, and sexual forms. Physical school violence includes student-on-student fighting and corporal punishment; psychological violence includes verbal abuse and other emotional harm; and sexual violence includes rape and sexual harassment occurring in a school setting. The category also includes bullying, including cyberbullying, and carrying weapons onto school grounds, and its defining feature is that the perpetrator typically holds more physical, social, or psychological power than the victim, which distinguishes bullying from a fight between students of roughly equal standing. Recognized sub-forms of bullying include physical bullying such as assault, kicking, or pushing; psychological bullying such as verbal abuse or social exclusion; sexual bullying such as unwanted jokes or gestures; and cyberbullying carried out through digital means.
