Sly-Grog Shop

A sly-grog shop is an unlicensed hotel, liquor store, or other vendor selling alcoholic beverages outside the law, historically associated in Australia with poor-quality product. The term grew out of Australia's early colonial period and remained current from the First World War through the 1960s, when strict early-closing laws for licensed premises created a demand that illicit sellers stepped in to meet, particularly in rural districts far from law enforcement that served pastoral workers and shearers from the 1800s onward. The same term also describes illegal alcohol sales in Indigenous communities where alcohol has been banned or restricted.
