A status offense is an action that is against the law only for a certain class of people, most often applied to acts committed by minors that would not be criminal if committed by an adult. In the United States the term is also used, in a separate sense, for an offense such as a traffic violation where the offenders motive plays no part in determining guilt; in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, this second kind of status offense is more often called a regulatory offense or a strict liability offense.
