A violent crime, also called a violent felony or a crime of violence, is a crime in which the offender uses or threatens to use harmful force against a victim. The category covers crimes in which violence is the objective itself, such as murder, assault, and assassination, crimes in which violence is used as a method of coercion or a show of force, such as robbery, extortion, and terrorism, and violent crimes that arise from unsafe working conditions, sometimes called safety crimes. Violent crimes may or may not involve weapons, and jurisdictions treat them across a wide range of severity, from harassment and criminal damage up through manslaughter and murder.
