Policing Practice and Social Reaction

Concepts about how police relate to the community they serve and how society reacts, sometimes disproportionately, to crime: a policing philosophy built on partnership and problem-solving with the community, the study of crime victims and their experience, the disproportionate scrutiny of a person by police based on their race, and two named episodes of widespread public alarm about crime that a later, calmer assessment judged to have exceeded the real threat. Belongs here: any concept about the relationship between police, the public and crime as a social and cultural phenomenon rather than as an individual case or offender. Does not belong here: concepts describing a specific investigative technique, grouped under Investigation and Evidence Concepts.
