The principle that punishment should be proportionate to the offense as a matter of just deserts, tracing to the lex talionis tradition and, in modern form, to Kant's Science of Right (1790) and Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right (1821), which argue the offender's punishment answers the wrong done rather than serving only some future social purpose.
