William Joseph Chambliss, who lived from 1933 to 2014, was an American criminologist and sociologist who taught for more than two decades as a professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at George Washington University. He was a leading figure in developing conflict theory within criminology, arguing that class conflict, rather than shared moral consensus, is the fundamental force shaping which acts a society criminalizes and how its criminal law is enforced, and he mentored numerous criminologists and sociologists who went on to lead the field.
