Biko Agozino

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Biko Agozino is a Nigerian-born criminologist and professor of sociology and Africana studies at Virginia Tech who developed counter-colonial criminology, a framework examining the imperialist origins and biases embedded in conventional Western theories of crime and punishment. His 1997 book Black Women and the Criminal Justice System applied this decolonizing lens to the treatment of Black women by justice systems, and his broader work traces how colonization continues to shape the policing and punishment of racial and ethnic minorities worldwide. He has also coordinated the criminology program at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago.
