Offense grades and legal classes sort offenses by seriousness and procedure. An infraction is among the most minor offenses, such as parking overtime, speeding and tailgating, far less serious than a misdemeanor, and in California the most it can bring is a fine of $250. A felony is a more serious offense that many states grade by letter, with Class A reserved for offenses whose maximum penalty is life imprisonment or death and Class B for a maximum term of twenty-five years or more. An indictable offense is a crime a prosecutor can charge by bringing evidence to a grand jury, and it covers serious crimes such as murder, manslaughter, rape, kidnapping, robbery, burglary, arson and fraud.
