ASEANAPOL, the ASEAN Chiefs of Police, is a regional police cooperation body for Southeast Asia, tracing its origin to the first conference of ASEAN police chiefs held in Manila, Philippines from 21 to 23 October 1981 among the founding members Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Membership subsequently expanded to include Brunei, joining in 1984, Vietnam in 1996, Laos and Myanmar in 1998, and Cambodia in 2000, so that ASEANAPOL now brings together the police forces of every ASEAN member state. Its purpose is to strengthen cooperation and coordination among member police forces against transnational crime, chiefly through intelligence sharing, joint training and capacity building rather than through any independent operational or investigative authority of its own. Continuity between the organization's annual chiefs of police conferences is maintained by the ASEANAPOL Permanent Secretariat, hosted by the Royal Malaysia Police and based in Kuala Lumpur.
