A series of mail bombings across the United States from 1978 to 1995. The eighteen year investigation, one of the costliest in FBI history, was closed in 1996 after FBI profiler James Fitzgerald used linguistic analysis to match the offenders published manifesto to the writing style of Ted Kaczynski. Was Kaczynski found to be legally insane?
No. He was found competent to stand trial and explicitly rejected an insanity defense his own lawyers wanted to use to avoid the death penalty, insisting he was sane. He ultimately pleaded guilty in 1998.
