The art student scam is a confidence trick in which cheap, mass produced paintings or prints are misrepresented as original artworks, often by young people posing as art students trying to raise money for supplies or tuition. Sellers have most often presented themselves as French art students, though the scheme has since been copied internationally, with people posing as Israeli, Chinese, Chilean, Nigerian and other art students or dealers reported in Australia, Canada, China, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States since around 2000, typically selling the work through exhibition sites or art galleries.
