Sacrilege is the violation or injurious treatment of a sacred object, site or person, taking the form of irreverence toward what a tradition holds sacred. When the offense is verbal it is generally called blasphemy, and when it is physical it is often called desecration; more broadly, any transgression against what is regarded as the virtue of religion, including entering a sacred site without permission, can be described as sacrilege. Various legal systems have historically criminalized sacrilege as its own offense distinct from the narrower verbal and physical forms it can take.
